“Matriarch” is a portrait series documenting the daily lives of women and girls on Her Farm Nepal, a rural matriarchal farming community that rejects Nepal’s patriarchal society and values equality, sustainability, and egalitarianism.
Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Her Farm Nepal was created for women escaping poverty and domestic abuse, making a space where individuals can gain financial liberation through owning their own land & raise their children in a community without gender-based violence.
The women of Her Farm have come as a result of domestic abuse, which is largely normalized in the South Asian patriarchy. Property ownership continues to be tied to the patriarchy, as land is always registered under a man’s name, particular one’s husband or father. The women of Her Farm have used the ownership of property to create their own community & rethink male supremacy.
