Mohanjeet: A Film in Progress.
In the Summer of 2016, Aditi crossed paths with Mohanjeet while backpacking Europe. While walking through the streets, she was taken aback when she came across a clothing boutique named “MOHANJEET”– a quintessential Punjabi name amidst French boutiques.
What followed was the start of a friendship between two Punjabi women at very different points in their life: Aditi, as a young artist developing her own self-definition and search for meaning as a first generation diasporic subject, and Mohanjeet, an artist at the end of her life riddled with art and culture as a means of expression and resistance.
For Aditi, Mohanjeet was the living answer to a question often raised by diasporic subjects: Does one have to sacrifice their cultural identity to make it in the West?
This documentary, currently in post-production, will present a blend of cinematic and documentary elements by re-create the crossing of paths between these two women, through the shared elements of cultural heritage, South Asian womanhood, and fashion, and further providing insight on the life and story of Mohanjeet Grewal.
